Facebook is soon going to hide the ‘Like Counter’ off News Feed posts. The reason behind this is to prevent users from comparing themselves to others. Moreover, it may also prevent users from deleting photos to which they have got less number of likes. However, this feature is not yet made available for users. Facebook has already started hiding like counts for some of its Instagram users. This feature has been tested in Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and a few other countries.
“By hiding the like/reaction counts from anyone other than the post creator, users might feel less anxious about the perceived popularity of their content,” Tech- blogger Jane writes on her blog.
The ‘Like’ feature was favorite for many but now as Facebook has decided to remove Like counts for the posts, it may disappoint many of its users. But, the decision has been taken for the well being of people as it will no longer make the users worry about whether their posts will get enough likes or not.
“It has been shown in multiple papers that social media use may influence mental health, including leading to depression and anxiety. It takes time to develop, observe, research and release experimental features like this. Experimental features could come and go. But I am certainly hiding the public like counts will be beneficial to the digital wellbeing of a large chunk of users.” Jane further added.
Removing Like counts off News Feed posts will not only affect the ‘Likes’ on a post but also will be applicable for some other reactions. Moreover, Facebook wants to avoid situations such as “Look how many likes they get.” This would, however, prevent users from feeling inadequate or low if their posts don’t get enough likes. However, it is not yet known to us that when this feature will be made available for Facebook users.
