Instagram’s New ‘Restrict’ feature lets you ‘shadow ban’ bullies

Facebook-owned photo-sharing app Instagram has rolled out a new feature named ‘Restrict’ that will protect account owners from bullies. So, whenever someone leaves you a rough comment, all you need to do is swipe left on the comment and choose ‘Restrict’ or else you can activate it via the Privacy tab or on the offender’s profile page. “Restrict is designed to empower you to quietly protect your account while still keeping an eye on the bully.”

“Bullying is a complex issue, and we know that young people face a disproportionate amount of online bullying but are reluctant to report or block peers who bully them,” said Instagram in announcing the filter.

The feature will also apply to unwanted direct messages, however, restricted accounts won’t be able to see when it’s read or when the person who has restricted them is active on Instagram. Moreover, the Restrict tool is Instagram’s ongoing campaign that would help people to protect themselves from harassment and bullying on the site.

Instagram also released an anti-bullying mission statement pledging its commitment to leading the fight against online bullying and rethinking to the whole experience of Instagram. This feature is available now on the Instagram app on both iOS and Android.
