American chipmaker Qualcomm has recently taken the wraps off a new chipset – the Snapdragon 855 Plus. The new chipset improves CPU and GPU clock speeds by 15%. However, the chipset is still equipped with X24 LTE modem which can be optionally connected to an external X50 modem for 5G support. The RAM & storage receives no upgrade whatsoever.
Kedar Kondap, Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. said, “Snapdragon 855 Plus will raise the bar for elite gamers with the increase in CPU and GPU performance and elevate experiences for 5G, gaming, AI and XR, which is something our OEM customers look to us to deliver. Snapdragon 855 Plus is our most advanced mobile platform to date and will build upon the success of the 2019 Android flagship Snapdragon 855 5G mobile platform.”
The noticeable change is in the form of GPU. The Adreno 640 is enhanced by 15% for more power-packed performance, which is clocked higher. Moreover, the already fast Kryo 485 CPU core got a boost from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz.
The chipset is aimed at future smartphones that are game-oriented and pack a great potential for AR/VR applications. There are a lot of phones yet to be made official, like the ASUS ROG Phone 2, Samsung Galaxy Note10, or the OnePlus 7T. If all goes well, one of them might debut with Qualcomm’s new and powerful 855 Plus.
