Unless you are living under a rock, you might know that TikTok has been in the news for a couple of days and not for a good reason. Recently, Madras High Court in its court orders has prohibited the download of TikTok in the state, whereas Karnataka is also pondering a similar move. The reason cited for the ban is the sleazy content, gravity-defying stunt and for promoting pornography. But despite facing flak, TikTok doesn’t seem to slow down. According to a new report, the Chinese app has gained almost 9 crore users in the last 3 months. Google Play accounted for 99% of downloads.
ByteDance, the Chinese tech who owns this app, has been in the negative light since it was exposed for illegally collecting personal information of children in the US. But it didn’t affect its rise. According to data analysis by Sensor Tower, TikTok added an estimated 188 million during Q1.
“To date, Sensor Tower data shows that TikTok has been installed by more than 1.1 billion App Store and Google Play Store users globally, and has grossed $80 million from in-app purchases,” Sensor Tower founder Oliver Yeh said. Further adding, “This growth was largely driven by India, where an estimated 88.6 million new users flocked to the app last quarter.”
